On September 8, 2024, the trial commenced for Ryan Wesley Routh, who is accused of plotting to assassinate former US President Donald Trump. This incident follows another assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed Trump’s ear, raising concerns about political violence ahead of the 2024 election. Both events prompted questions regarding the effectiveness of the Secret Service in safeguarding prominent presidential candidates.
Routh, aged 59 and originally from North Carolina, has a previous criminal record and reportedly expressed support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. He is representing himself in the trial and has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
The alleged assassination attempt took place on September 15, 2024, while Trump was golfing at a club in West Palm Beach, Florida. According to court documents, Routh was spotted by a Secret Service agent hiding in the bushes. It is alleged that Routh fired at the agent before fleeing in a black Nissan Xterra. He was later apprehended on Interstate 95. Importantly, Trump was not harmed during this incident.
Investigators found an SKS semiautomatic rifle with a scope in the area where Routh was hiding, along with documents listing upcoming events featuring Trump. A witness also reported that Routh had left a box at home containing a note that stated, “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I am so sorry I failed you.”
Routh faces several charges, including attempted assassination of a presidential candidate and assaulting a federal officer. He has been in custody awaiting trial.
The trial is taking place at a federal courthouse in Fort Pierce, Florida, with jury selection currently underway. Judge Aileen Cannon, who previously presided over a separate case involving Trump, will oversee the proceedings. Routh’s choice to defend himself has raised questions; he has indicated dissatisfaction with potential legal counsel, stating he feels his attorneys are not adequately representing him. Judge Cannon has cautioned against self-representation, highlighting the benefits of having professional legal assistance.
