Rotherham Council launches winter energy cost support scheme

Rotherham Council has introduced an Energy Crisis Support Scheme aimed at assisting households facing difficulties with energy bills this winter. The initiative has an allocated budget of £500,000, allowing eligible residents to receive payments of up to £250.

To qualify for the support, individuals must demonstrate that they have £150 or less remaining each month after covering essential expenses, such as housing, food, and utilities. There are no age restrictions on eligibility, and the program is available to individuals who are not receiving benefits.

Council leader Chris Read noted that over 3,000 residents utilized this scheme last year. He emphasized the ongoing challenges that some residents face with gas and electricity expenses, despite a reduction in energy bill increases. He urged those in need to consider this available support.

In addition to the local initiative, residents in Rotherham can also access national programs designed to assist with energy costs, including the £150 Warm Home Discount and Winter Fuel Payment.

Other councils in South Yorkshire are also exploring ways to support residents. Sheffield City Council has stated it is collaborating with community partners to ensure individuals can access necessary assistance. The Household Support Fund in Sheffield is available for residents struggling with essentials, such as food and fuel.

Local charities, such as the Link Community Hub, offer advice and support to those impacted by poverty and deprivation. The hub’s manager highlighted the importance of utility bill support schemes, noting that many working individuals who do not qualify for benefits often seek help with basic necessities like food, underscoring the need for accessible support options.
