Rising food costs in Jersey are reportedly pushing families closer to poverty, according to Carl Walker, the chairman of Jersey’s Consumer Council. Recent inflation figures revealed that food prices increased by 4.1% in 2025, a significant change compared to previous inflation rates of 12%. Walker noted that while the 4% increase may appear manageable, it can still have severe implications for families with lower incomes, particularly those with children.
Walker emphasized that many residents notice the continual rise in food prices, yet there are opportunities for savings. He stated that significant price variations exist for the same food items among the limited number of supermarkets on the island. Increasing consumer awareness of these price differences could help individuals make more economical choices.
In response to growing concerns about food affordability, a petition advocating for the removal of the goods and services tax (GST) on food has garnered over 1,000 signatures. While Walker acknowledged the potential benefits of such a move for consumers, he expressed caution regarding its implications for government revenue, indicating that the loss of income from GST would need to be compensated in other ways.
Many residents have turned to the Olio app, which enables users to purchase unsold supermarket food at reduced rates, as a means of coping with higher food prices. Natalie Standen, a volunteer and user of the app, has observed a significant increase in its popularity during her eight years of service. She noted that the app helps families save money on essential items such as bread, salad, and fruits.
As food prices continue to rise, many are questioning how families will manage their budgets and what broader solutions might emerge to address these economic challenges.
