Rise in UK Thanksgivings driven by growing appetite for US foods, retailers say | Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving, traditionally known in the UK primarily through American films, is experiencing a rise in popularity as interest in US cuisine increases. Retailers and restaurants report heightened sales and bookings in anticipation of the American holiday, driven by a growing appreciation for American flavors and an increasing number of American expatriates in the UK.

For instance, Pipers Farm in Devon noted a 38% rise in turkey and Thanksgiving product sales in the two weeks leading up to Thanksgiving last year. The farm has expanded its offerings to accommodate expected higher demand this year. Data from online retailer Ocado indicates significant growth in interest, with searches for Thanksgiving up 440% year on year and pumpkin spice products rising more than 550%. Additionally, sales of certain American food items, such as Herr’s buffalo blue cheese curls and Newman’s Own ranch dressing, have seen increases of 410% and 202%, respectively.

Research by Mintel shows that 42% of Gen Z and millennials in the UK have attended a Thanksgiving meal, and 16% plan to host or attend one for the first time this November. Over half of those surveyed believe that US holidays like Thanksgiving are becoming more integrated into British culture. Market trends suggest rising interest in American-style cuisine, with particular popularity among younger consumers; approximately 67% of those aged 18 to 24 expressed interest in ordering southern US dishes.

At London’s restaurant CUT at 45 Park Lane, Thanksgiving services have expanded due to increasing demand, with bookings reportedly doubling year on year. While American customers contribute to this trend, many locals are also eager to experience the holiday for the first time. Whole Foods Market UK reports that demand for Thanksgiving products is becoming comparable to that of Christmas, with a notable increase in curiosity among British shoppers regarding the holiday traditions and foods associated with it.
