United States Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has moderated his earlier warning regarding the use of Tylenol during pregnancy and its alleged link to autism in children. During a recent news conference, Kennedy stated, “The causative association between Tylenol given in pregnancy and the perinatal periods is not sufficient to say it definitely causes autism. But it’s very suggestive.” He emphasized the need for a cautious approach and advised mothers and pregnant individuals to consult their physicians regarding the use of the medication.
Kennedy’s updated position aligns more closely with the guidance from reputable health organizations. While some research has suggested a potential association between Tylenol and autism, no conclusive evidence has been established. The World Health Organization has also stated that “no consistent association has been established” between the medication and autism, despite extensive research efforts.
In response to the controversy, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson and Kenvue, the manufacturers of Tylenol. The lawsuit accuses the companies of deceptive practices, claiming they violated Texas consumer protection laws by marketing Tylenol as the only safe painkiller for pregnant women. This legal action has been framed within a broader narrative of holding pharmaceutical companies accountable.
Former President Donald Trump also contributed to the discourse when he suggested that Tylenol could be associated with an increased risk of autism during a news conference in September; however, his claims lacked supportive scientific evidence. Both Trump and Kennedy have been criticized for disseminating scientific misinformation in the past.
Kenvue has defended the safety of acetaminophen as the preferred pain reliever for pregnant women, acknowledging that unmanaged high fevers and pain can pose substantial risks during pregnancy. They remain confident in their legal position against the claims made in the lawsuit.
