Reddit has been included in Australia’s new social media ban aimed at children under 16, set to take effect on December 10. This initiative marks a world-first approach to restricting children’s access to certain online platforms. Alongside Reddit, the ban will include live-streaming platform Kick, totaling nine targeted sites. These also encompass Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Threads.
Under the new regulations, tech companies face potential fines of up to A$50 million (approximately $32.5 million or £25.7 million) if they fail to take “reasonable steps” to deactivate existing accounts for users under 16 and prevent the creation of new accounts. The government has indicated that each platform was selected based on its primary function of facilitating online social interaction, with the possibility of adding more platforms as technology evolves.
Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, has noted that delaying children’s access to social media may provide them with crucial time to grow without exposure to complex design features meant to engage users. However, messaging services like Discord and WhatsApp, as well as gaming platforms such as Lego Play and Roblox, will remain unaffected by the ban. Educational platforms like Google Classroom and YouTube Kids are also exempt.
Federal Communications Minister Anika Wells emphasized that the ban aims to protect children from the potential risks posed by online platforms. Yet, how companies will enforce this change is still uncertain. Possible age verification methods discussed include requiring official ID, parental consent, and facial recognition technology, although concerns have been raised regarding data privacy and the effectiveness of these measures.
While polls indicate support for the ban among Australian adults, some mental health advocates argue it may limit children’s connections or drive them to less regulated areas of the internet. There are recommendations for improved oversight of harmful content on social media instead of a blanket ban. An influencer family, facing the restrictions, has even announced plans to relocate to the UK to allow their 14-year-old daughter to continue creating online content.
