The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently issued a warning regarding certain e-bike batteries from Rad Power Bikes, highlighting potential fire risks associated with the products. The agency noted that these batteries could unexpectedly ignite or explode, particularly if water or debris infiltrates their cells or harness. There have been 31 reported fires linked to these batteries, leading to property damages totaling approximately $734,500. Notably, these incidents occurred even when the bikes were not in use or charging, but no injuries have been reported.
CPSC identified multiple Rad Power Bikes models in its warning, including RadWagon 4, RadCity HS 4, and others. The affected batteries bear model numbers HL-RP-S1304 or RP-1304, found on the rear of the battery, and were all manufactured in China.
Rad Power Bikes has reportedly declined to agree to an acceptable recall, citing significant financial struggles that hinder their ability to provide battery replacements or refunds to consumers. The company’s current situation arises in the context of a difficult financial landscape, exacerbated by the decline following the post-COVID bike boom.
Emerging concerns about e-bike batteries are not isolated; similar issues have been identified in various jurisdictions across the U.S. and the U.K., where faulty batteries have resulted in severe incidents. In response to safety concerns, Rad Power Bikes introduced “Safe Shield” batteries with thermal-resistant technology last year, designed to mitigate fire risks. However, models mentioned in the CPSC warning do not include these newer batteries.
Rad Power Bikes maintains that their products meet industry safety standards and that the incidents cited by CPSC represent a small fraction of overall battery use. The company asserts it is committed to collaborating with CPSC to address these safety concerns but argues that the financial implications of a blanket recall could jeopardize its operations.
