Qualcomm teams up with BMW for hands-free driving

Qualcomm is collaborating with BMW to create a new driver-assist system, enabling drivers to operate hands-free on designated roads. The partnership aims to enhance Qualcomm’s automotive technology portfolio, which services various automakers. The company currently reports a $45 billion future revenue stream in its automotive segment.

The jointly developed software system, built on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Ride system-on-a-chip, seeks to advance hands-free driving and other autonomous features. This initiative signifies a shift towards automakers taking an active role in developing their autonomous systems. Qualcomm claims the software meets rigorous safety standards, specifically aligning with the European Union’s New Car Assessment Programme for Level 2 Plus systems.

Similar to existing systems from Tesla, GM, and Ford, Qualcomm’s offering allows drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel and feet from the pedals on approved roads, although the rules regarding usage can vary among auto brands. The Snapdragon Ride Pilot system was showcased at the Munich auto show in the BMW iX3, the company’s first new generation electric vehicle. It has been validated for use in over 60 countries and plans to expand to more than 100 by 2026. This system will be accessible to various automakers and Tier-1 suppliers.

Qualcomm emphasizes that its driver-assist features are designed to improve safety, not just convenience. They believe advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS) should be as common as seatbelts, offering both safety benefits and enhanced productivity. The system includes a driver monitoring feature to ensure engagement with the road. Qualcomm asserts that it incorporates multiple algorithms to ensure safety, though they acknowledge the unpredictability of driving conditions and the importance of maintaining driver attention.
