Prominent Ukrainian politician Andriy Parubiy shot dead in Lviv

Former Ukrainian parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy has been reported killed in Lviv, according to Ukrainian authorities. The incident took place around midday local time on Saturday in the Frankivsk district. As of now, it remains unclear whether any suspects have been apprehended.

Parubiy, 54, gained prominence through his involvement in Ukraine’s Maidan movement, which advocated for increased relations with the European Union and played a role in the ousting of pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych in 2014. In response to the incident, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky characterized the act as a “terrible murder” and expressed his condolences to Parubiy’s family and friends.

Investigations into the shooting are being conducted by Ukraine’s national police, Lviv Regional police, and the security service. Early reports indicate that Parubiy was allegedly shot multiple times by an individual on an e-bike who was dressed as a courier. However, the identity of the attacker and the motive behind the shooting remain uncertain.

In a statement on Telegram, Zelensky noted that Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko had briefed him on the first details surrounding the incident. He mentioned that all necessary resources are being mobilized to investigate the circumstances of Parubiy’s death and to apprehend the perpetrator.
