Many of these interactions are recorded and shared on TikTok, garnering millions of views.
However, the situation can escalate significantly when parents, believing there may be an intruder, contact law enforcement. Such calls are treated as serious emergencies, particularly when children are involved. According to police officials, these pranks can divert crucial resources and create dangerous situations. For instance, Round Rock Police Patrol Division Commander Andy McKinney noted the possibility of a SWAT response being triggered by these incidents.
The Salem, MA police department expressed concern about the implications of such pranks, stating that they can dehumanize homeless individuals, induce panic in those receiving calls, and waste police resources. Officers dispatched to these situations approach them as genuine emergencies, which can lead to unnecessary risks for both responders and pranksters.
