Overnight on Saturday into Sunday, Russia conducted missile and drone attacks targeting Ukraine, primarily impacting the western city of Lviv. The Polish military reported that it scrambled fighter jets to protect its airspace amid these attacks, and additional allied NATO aircraft were also deployed. According to Lviv’s regional head, Maksym Kozytskyi, two individuals were killed and two others injured as a result of these strikes.
In separate incidents, Russian forces targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with a strike on a power plant in Zaporizhzhia that resulted in one death and left over 73,000 residents without electricity. Lviv’s mayor, Andriy Sadovyi, noted that part of the city, located approximately 70 km from the Polish border, was without power and that air defense systems were heavily engaged in fending off both drone and missile attacks.
By 5:10 AM local time (02:10 GMT), air raid alerts were issued across Ukraine, prompting heightened readiness among Polish and allied aircraft, as indicated by Poland’s operational command. Public transport in another western city, Ivano-Frankivsk, would also be delayed due to the ongoing situation.
These assaults occurred shortly after a U.S. official indicated support for Ukraine conducting deep strikes within Russian territory. Air defense units in Russia reportedly destroyed 32 Ukrainian drones during this period, according to state news agency RIA.
Meanwhile, Lithuania briefly closed its airspace following the sighting of unidentified objects, affecting operations at its main airport in Vilnius until it was reopened early Sunday morning. The incidents come amid escalating tensions, as Russian forces continue to control a significant portion of Ukrainian territory since their full-scale invasion in 2022.
