PlasmidFactory GmbH and the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the development of cell therapy processes and GMP manufacturing. The aim is to enhance the availability of non-viral cell and gene therapies for patients.
PlasmidFactory, based in Europe, specializes in plasmid and Minicircle DNA production, boasting over 25 years of experience and over 3,500 DNA constructs delivered globally. The Fraunhofer IZI contributes significant capabilities in immuno-oncology, regenerative medicine, and cell manufacturing.
The partnership seeks to improve next-generation, virus-free genetic engineering platforms while adhering to high regulatory and quality standards.
Previously, the partners have successfully established CAR-T cell manufacturing processes and conducted joint research on virus-free gene transfer, laying the groundwork for clinical cell product production.
PlasmidFactory’s CEO, Dr. Dirk Winnemöller, highlighted that this collaboration builds on their ongoing relationship, allowing for smoother non-viral manufacturing workflows. Professor Dr. Michael Hudecek from Fraunhofer IZI noted that PlasmidFactory’s expertise complements their translational capabilities in advancing non-viral engineering platforms.
The collaboration emphasizes the commitment to advancing technologies like minicircles that can address challenges associated with viral vector production and ultimately enhance Europe’s competitiveness in advanced therapies.
- Why it matters: This collaboration could facilitate the development of safer, more efficient therapies for patients, potentially reducing reliance on viral vectors, which have associated costs and safety concerns.
- The latest: The partnership aims to streamline the production of non-viral therapies, which could lead to faster patient access to advanced treatments.
