Google has announced an upcoming update for its Pixel smartphones, introducing notification summaries as a new feature. This AI-powered functionality will initially be available only for chat conversations and is part of the Pixel update scheduled for December, specifically targeting the Pixel 9 series and newer models, excluding the Pixel 9A.
Mishaal Rahman from Android Authority provided insights into this feature in August, noting that the notification summaries will be restricted to longer chat conversations, as this approach allows the AI to gather more context, potentially improving its accuracy compared to previous attempts, such as Apple’s. In addition to this, Google plans to enhance its notifications system further by automatically organizing notifications and muting those deemed lower priority in a future update.
Moreover, Google is expanding its scam detection feature beyond just Pixel phones, now incorporating it into certain third-party messaging applications, including Telegram and Discord, for devices starting with the Pixel 6. Users will receive notifications marked as “likely scam,” prompting caution when interacted with, and this feature will also extend to call spam detection for Pixel 9 users in select countries, although the 9A model is not included.
In another development within Google’s messaging application, users will soon have the ability to “remix” photos using AI directly in Messages. This feature will be accessible not only to Pixel users but also across the broader Android ecosystem, though it will currently be limited to English speakers in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, and New Zealand. Additionally, Pixel 6 and newer models will prioritize chat notifications from designated VIP contacts.
