Paul Biya sworn in for eighth term as Cameroon’s president

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, aged 92, has been inaugurated for another seven-year term in a ceremony held at the parliament in Yaoundé. Biya’s recent election, in which he secured an eighth term, has been characterized by controversy and disputes surrounding the electoral process.

Having held power for 43 years, Biya has faced criticism for his minimal public campaign engagement, having only addressed one rally prior to the election. According to official results, Biya received 54% of the votes, while his opponent, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, garnered 35%. Tchiroma Bakary has publicly claimed that he was the rightful winner of the election and has accused the government of electoral fraud, allegations that authorities have refuted.

The political landscape in Cameroon remains tense as questions arise regarding the integrity of the electoral process and the future direction of leadership under Biya’s extended rule.
