Partnering with generative AI in the finance function

Generative AI is increasingly recognized for its potential in finance-related functions such as treasury management, cash flow forecasting, revenue management, liquidity analysis, contract automation, and investment evaluation. However, there are challenges regarding the integration of generative AI into forecasting tasks due to inherent mathematical limitations in large language models (LLMs). According to Deloitte’s 2024 State of Generative AI in the Enterprise survey, 19% of financial organizations have adopted generative AI solutions.

Despite facing returns from generative AI investments in finance that are currently 8 percentage points below expectations, many finance departments continue to pursue this technology. Deloitte’s fourth-quarter 2024 North American CFO Signals survey indicated that 46% of CFOs expect to increase deployment or spending on generative AI in finance within the next year. Respondents highlighted the potential benefits including cost control through automation and enabling employees to focus on higher-level, more productive tasks.

Robyn Peters, a principal in finance transformation at Deloitte Consulting LLP, noted that while AI has long been used for customer-facing roles, finance departments are still heavily reliant on traditional document and presentation creation methods. She emphasized that the finance sector has not yet fully integrated the customer-centric experiences seen in industries such as retail and hospitality, despite the fact that AI could facilitate this transition.

CFOs may risk falling behind if they remain passive while AI technology evolves, especially as future finance professionals are familiar with generative AI tools. It may be necessary for CFOs to rethink the framework of successful finance roles in conjunction with the capabilities offered by AI technology.
