OpenAI’s new social video app will let you deepfake your friends

OpenAI has launched an updated version of its Sora AI video generator, alongside a new social video app also named Sora, targeted for iPhone users. The app, which is currently available only by invitation to users in the US and Canada, features a video feed similar to TikTok but diverges by allowing users to create short videos that others can transform into AI-generated deepfakes with their consent.

In a recent briefing, OpenAI employees mentioned the app’s potential significance for video generation, likening it to a pivotal moment in the evolution of ChatGPT. Upon gaining access to the app, users receive four additional invitations to share with friends. However, there is no current timeline for the release of an Android version.

The Sora app includes features enabling users to grant permissions to friends or the wider public to create “cameos” using their likeness through the Sora 2 video model. Those whose images are utilized in these cameos are classified as “co-owners” and can delete or revoke access to the content at any time. Similar to TikTok, Sora allows for engagement with trending videos via a “Remix” feature, though it currently limits video generation to 10 seconds.

OpenAI has implemented certain restrictions regarding the creation of videos featuring public figures. Presently, public figures cannot be digitally recreated unless they have consented by uploading a cameo themselves. This policy also applies to general users—only individuals who have uploaded a cameo can have their likeness used. Additionally, the platform currently prohibits the generation of X-rated or extreme content.
