OpenAI has recently introduced ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser aimed at competing with existing browsers, such as Google Chrome. Adam Fry, who leads the Atlas team, indicated that the development of new features is already underway, with many improvements expected in the near future.
Fry announced on social media that updates will include user profiles, tab groups, and an opt-in ad blocker, which are functionalities typical of various popular browsers. These features were part of a list of enhancements designated as “post-launch fixes,” and Fry anticipates that most will be implemented over the coming weeks, although some may require additional time.
Additional upgrades mentioned in the list include a new overflow bookmarks menu and an assortment of keyboard shortcuts. Key AI functions are also set for improvements, particularly the browser’s agent, currently available only to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. This agent is designed to perform tasks on behalf of users and will have enhanced response times, a more reliable pause function, and better integration with services like Google Drive and Excel. The integration of the Ask ChatGPT sidebar will also be refined to allow for a more seamless experience, enabling users to manage projects and select AI models without navigating away from their work.
Fry invited further suggestions from users, implying that OpenAI has a prototype that could enable easier copying and insertion of text directly from the Ask ChatGPT sidebar. He also mentioned the potential for an automatic restart feature that would reopen pinned tabs upon closing and reopening the browser.
Moreover, Fry noted that the team is addressing specific, yet undisclosed, fixes for the password manager 1Password and other developments may require collaboration with partners.
