OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-enabled web browser, which is currently available globally on macOS, with upcoming support for Windows, iOS, and Android. This release follows prior rumors of a web browser from OpenAI that might compete with Google’s Chrome. During a livestream, CEO Sam Altman expressed the intention for Atlas to transform how users interact with the web, shifting from traditional URL typing to more conversational engagement.
Atlas allows users to search for information through prompts or questions, as well as by entering URLs. A notable feature of Atlas is its ability to deploy agents for task completion within the browser; however, this feature is exclusive to ChatGPT Business, Plus, and Pro subscribers for the time being.
Upon opening Atlas, users are prompted to import data from existing browsers, specifically Chrome or Safari. This imported data supports Atlas in generating personalized suggestions, though initial user experiences with memory retrieval have been inconsistent. The in-browser chat feature aims to minimize tasks like copy-pasting, allowing users to interact with ChatGPT even while using other applications, such as email.
The infrastructure for agents has been strengthened in anticipation of increased user reliance on such functionality. For example, users can generate a grocery list based on a recipe they’re viewing. While OpenAI has developed capabilities related to e-commerce, the demonstration did not allow agents to proceed with actual purchases.
The introduction of an AI-powered browser has intensified competition among tech companies, with existing browsers like Chrome gradually integrating AI functionalities. Other browsers, such as Perplexity’s Comet and Opera, have also adopted AI features, indicating an evolving landscape for web browsing solutions. OpenAI has indicated that Atlas is just the initial release, suggesting potential future iterations.
