OpenAI’s Sora app has introduced a feature that allows users to create reusable avatars for AI-generated videos, referred to as “character cameos.” This enhancement is part of the Sora 2 video generator, which also includes new tools for clip stitching and leaderboards displaying popular videos and cameos.
Previously announced, the character cameos build upon an existing functionality that enables users to create AI deepfakes of themselves for public use, contingent on their approval. With this update, users can apply these capabilities to various subjects, including pets, illustrations, and toys. To facilitate this, the feature launches with a selection of pre-made characters available for incorporation into videos.
According to OpenAI, users can set permissions for each character independently of their personal likeness, with options to restrict access to oneself, share with mutual followers, or make it available to the entire Sora community. Users can also assign a display name and handle to their character, tagging it for use in videos.
While the update offers the potential to create characters based on original personas generated within Sora, there is uncertainty regarding the acceptance of fictional individuals crafted using other AI tools and the degree of realism permitted. OpenAI has not clarified how Sora would differentiate between AI-generated personas and images of actual people. This update arrives shortly after Cameo, a celebrity video platform, initiated a trademark infringement lawsuit against OpenAI concerning the use of the term “cameo” in the app’s features.
Additionally, Sora is incorporating video stitching capabilities to merge multiple videos into extended multi-scene clips. It is also introducing leaderboards to highlight the most remixed videos and users. To encourage engagement with these new features, OpenAI has temporarily simplified access to the Sora app, allowing users in the US, Canada, Japan, and Korea to sign up without an invitation code for a limited time.
