One killed and at least six injured in mass stabbing

A mass stabbing incident in Hollow Water First Nation, a remote indigenous community in Manitoba, Canada, has resulted in one death and injuries to at least six others, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The suspect in the attack also died. The incident, which the RCMP has classified as a “mass casualty” event, occurred around 200 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.

Eight individuals were transported to local hospitals with varying degrees of injury, as reported by Shared Health, the provincial health authority. The Stars air ambulance service confirmed that they responded to the emergency, transporting two patients to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.

Details surrounding the event remain limited, and a news conference by the RCMP is scheduled for 14:00 local time (19:00 GMT). The police have advised residents of Hollow Water First Nation to anticipate a significant law enforcement presence in the area. They have also stated that there is no ongoing risk to public safety.

Condolences were extended by the RCMP to those affected by the incident. The investigation will be led by the RCMP major crimes unit. In a letter to residents, the chief and council of Hollow Water expressed their sorrow for the community’s loss.

One of the injured individuals, identified as Michael Raven, reportedly sustained a stab wound to the lung after being attacked in his home. Family members indicated that the suspect broke in while he was asleep. The community has expressed feelings of distress, noting that such violence is uncommon in Hollow Water.

This incident has occurred on the third anniversary of a similar mass stabbing in James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon, Saskatchewan, where 11 people were killed. In that case, the suspect died shortly after being apprehended by police.
