Overview of Obsidian and Leadership Insights from CEO Steph Ango
Casey Newton hosted CEO Steph Ango of Obsidian on the Decoder podcast to discuss the app’s unique approach to note-taking and productivity. Obsidian, launched in 2020, operates as a Markdown-based software that stores files locally, enabling users to create a personal knowledge base without relying on cloud services. This feature contrasts with other productivity apps, such as Notion, which depend on cloud storage.
Ango joined Obsidian in 2023, despite not being one of the founders, recognizing the app’s potential to enhance personal productivity. He shared that Obsidian users range from students to authors, benefiting from its linking system that functions similarly to Wikipedia. Users can create a web of interconnected notes, which helps facilitate deeper thought processes.
Obsidian offers a freemium model, charging for additional features such as cross-device syncing and version history. The company does not track user data, which aligns with its commitment to user privacy. Ango highlighted that the company is unaware of its user metrics, a practice he believes fosters freedom in how users engage with the software.
Furthermore, Ango noted that the plugin ecosystem—where users can develop their own functionalities—plays a crucial role in the app’s expansion without overwhelming typical users with feature bloat. Plugins allow for tailored experiences based on individual needs, which may change over time.
He also described how people use Obsidian for new purposes, such as tracking reading lists or project management. While discussing the integration of AI into productivity tools, Ango expressed caution, emphasizing that any AI features would need to align with Obsidian’s values on privacy and user ownership.
Looking forward, Ango mentioned ongoing project development, including a feature called Bases, which will enhance data visualization within Obsidian. The focus will remain on maintaining a small, user-centered company structure that encourages innovation based on community feedback.
