Nvidia, a leading US technology company, has announced plans to invest up to $100 billion (£73 billion) in OpenAI, the organization behind the ChatGPT platform. This investment will primarily focus on supplying high-performance chips essential for the processing power required in artificial intelligence (AI) applications, a field in which OpenAI specializes.
The partnership has been labeled a “strategic partnership” by Nvidia and underscores the competitive landscape of AI development, particularly in light of China’s growing presence in this sector. This announcement follows a series of notable investments by Nvidia, including a $5 billion investment in Intel and a £2 billion commitment to the UK’s AI industry.
Nvidia stated that the funds will be directed towards enhancing data centers for what it describes as OpenAI’s “next-generation AI infrastructure.” Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, indicated that this funding represents a significant step toward advancing technology and intelligence development.
Both Nvidia and OpenAI have indicated that they are collaborating with a variety of partners to create an extensive and advanced AI infrastructure. This network includes companies such as Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate. OpenAI has reported that it currently has over 700 million weekly active users, highlighting its significant reach in the AI landscape. The organization noted that the new alliance with Nvidia aims to further its goal of developing artificial general intelligence that serves the interests of humanity.
The specifics of the investment are expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.
