The duffel coat, commonly associated with the children’s character Paddington Bear, has recently seen a resurgence in popularity among adults. This year, it has made appearances in various media, including the Christmas advert for Waitrose featuring comedian Joe Wilkinson, as well as a Burberry campaign with footballer Cole Palmer and a video by Tyler, the Creator.
The coat is also present in retail, with brands like John Lewis and Marks & Spencer offering diverse styles, including a cream variant priced at £279 and a checked design for £64. Sales of duffel coats at John Lewis have reportedly increased by 75% compared to the previous month, while searches on the resale platform Depop have risen by 159% over the last four months.
Although traditionally viewed as a unisex garment, the current trend appears to be particularly appealing to men. Andrew Groves, director of the menswear archive at the University of Westminster, notes that this trend reflects a broader movement toward clothing that emphasizes functionality and origin.
Historically, the duffel coat has roots in Belgium, where the fabric originated, and gained popularity among the Royal Navy. It became a symbol during World War II, associated with Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. After the war, the coat transitioned to civilian life, often favored by avant-garde figures and cultural icons like David Bowie.
A spokesperson from Depop attributes the growing interest to a shift towards “heritage fashion,” where traditional pieces are integrated into modern style. However, Teo van den Broeke, editor-in-chief of Esquire, expresses skepticism about the coat’s appeal to adults, identifying it as somewhat infantilizing. Nonetheless, he acknowledges its enduring presence in fashion history, suggesting a classic quality that persists despite evolving trends.
