Norway has finalized a £10 billion agreement to acquire anti-submarine warships, specifically Type 26 frigates, from the United Kingdom. This partnership aims to enhance joint military operations in northern Europe, particularly in response to increasing Russian military activity in the region.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), this deal represents the largest warship export agreement by value for the UK and constitutes Norway’s most significant defense procurement commitment to date. The contract is anticipated to generate substantial economic benefits for the UK, estimated at £10 billion, while supporting approximately 4,000 jobs across the country into the 2030s. The frigates will be constructed at BAE Systems shipyards in Glasgow, which are also building eight additional frigates for the Royal Navy.
The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, highlighted its potential to create jobs and bolster national security through the export of Type 26 frigates. The shipbuilding initiative is projected to support 432 businesses, with a notable concentration in Scotland and northern England.
This deal also indicates a solidified long-term strategic partnership between Norway and the UK, with a total of 13 frigates planned for joint operations. These will include eight British vessels and at least five from Norway, intended to fortify NATO’s northern defenses.
Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, expressed confidence in the collaboration, stating it aligns with the interests of both nations. In light of prior incidents of alleged sabotage targeting critical underwater infrastructure in Europe, the agreement aims to enhance maritime security in the region.
The Type 26 frigate boasts advanced weaponry and sensor technology, designed for adaptability to counter emerging threats. BAE Systems’ CEO, Charles Woodburn, noted that Norway’s decision reflects trust in British industrial capabilities to support its maritime security within the NATO framework.
