Alison currently has two dogs, seven rabbits, and three guinea pigs, which collectively cost her up to £500 per month, excluding veterinary expenses. She expressed concerns about being unable to afford treatment for her pets if they fall ill, leading to sleepless nights.
Alison noted that maintaining insurance for her pets is financially challenging, saying that a comprehensive policy for one of her dogs, which had cancer, cost £135 per month after renewal. She mentioned that such expenses are beyond her budget and questioned whether she could afford future treatments.
The costs associated with pet insurance have increased notably, with a reported 20% rise in March 2024 compared to the previous year. This surge coincides with a decline in the number of pets being insured and is linked to rising veterinary fees during a time when many households are experiencing financial strain.
Alison’s rabbits require specific vaccinations that are more expensive than those for dogs, costing about £75 each. As rabbits are categorized as “exotic pets,” their veterinary bills tend to be higher. Consequently, she has had to reconsider taking her rabbits to the vet, often opting to treat them at home to minimize costs.
Experts like Dr. Paul Manktelow from Blue Cross highlight that the inability of pet owners to cover veterinary expenses is creating challenges for animal rehoming services. This has broader implications for veterinary care, as many pet owners delay seeking medical help, often resulting in deteriorating health conditions for their pets.
With the ongoing increase in expenses, Sarah Cardell from the Competition and Markets Authority advises pet owners to compare treatment costs across various veterinary practices and consider payment plans to manage financial burden effectively.
