Nigerian actor, content creator, and influencer Odira Nwobu has passed away at the age of 43 in South Africa, as confirmed by his lawyer and the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria. His death has prompted responses of grief from fans and colleagues in Nigeria, where he was known for his roles in over 60 films and his comedic style. Details surrounding his passing remain unclear, and a coroner’s report is expected soon.
Reports indicate that Nwobu was found in his hotel room in Benoni, near Johannesburg, where he was discovered alone and experiencing difficulty breathing. Paramedics were called to the scene, attempted to resuscitate him using a defibrillator, but Nwobu was declared dead before reaching a hospital, according to his lawyer, Chukwujiekwu Chukwudi.
Born in Enugu, Nigeria, in 1982, Nwobu began his acting career shortly after finishing secondary school with a role in the film “Joseph the Dreamer.” Throughout his career, he expressed feelings of being typecast, which led him to venture into content creation across platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, where he gained a substantial following. At the time of his death, he was in South Africa with a group of social media influencers for promotional activities related to a real estate company.
Nwobu was not married and reportedly had no children. His family has not yet issued any public statements regarding his death. Additionally, in July, he had survived a road accident that led to confusion and speculation about his wellbeing at that time.
