Nine individuals were reported killed, and dozens more injured following a Russian attack on the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. The assault involved the launch of over 470 drones and 47 missiles, targeting residential areas, including nine-story apartment buildings.
In addition to Ternopil, the city of Kharkiv faced significant drone activity, with three districts experiencing attacks that resulted in injuries to more than 30 individuals, including children. Online images depicted damage to buildings and vehicles, raising concerns about public safety.
The Ukrainian energy ministry reported power outages in several regions due to the attacks. The incidents occurred early Wednesday and have been noted as one of the most severe assaults on western Ukraine since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Zelensky mentioned extensive destruction in Ternopil and indicated that individuals might be trapped beneath the rubble.
Infrastructure across western Ukraine, including energy facilities, transportation, and civil structures, suffered considerable damage. The Ivano-Frankivsk region reported an attack on its energy sector, with two of the three injured being children. Furthermore, the Lviv region experienced strikes on critical infrastructure, particularly energy facilities.
While in Turkey for discussions with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Zelensky called for increased assistance from Ukraine’s allies, suggesting that attacks like these reveal the inadequacy of current pressures on Russia. He emphasized the need for effective sanctions and support to alter the situation.
Zelensky had also expressed a desire to accelerate peace negotiations prior to his meeting in Ankara; however, the Kremlin indicated that no Russian representatives would attend.
