Nine people have died and 32 others sustained injuries following an accidental explosion at a police station in Indian-administered Kashmir. The blast occurred at Nowgam police station late on Friday evening, reportedly involving a stockpile of confiscated explosives that had been seized from Faridabad in the northern state of Haryana earlier that week.
According to police reports, the explosives were being prepared for forensic examination when a mishap during handling led to their detonation around 23:20 local time. The region’s director general of police, Nalin Prabhat, characterized the incident as “very unfortunate” and confirmed that it was an accidental detonation rather than a terrorist attack. He stated that any further speculation about the cause of the explosion is unnecessary.
The explosion caused significant damage to the police station and affected nearby buildings. Multiple vehicles were destroyed by flames, and debris was scattered across the area. Reports indicated that body parts were discovered up to 100-200 meters away from the site of the blast.
The majority of the victims were police officers, along with forensic personnel, two crime scene photographers, and an unrelated individual present at the scene. Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of the region, has publicly expressed his condolences and initiated an investigation into the incident. He stated his intention to determine the exact cause of the accidental explosion and offered prayers for the recovery of those injured.
