Nikon’s first RED co-brand is the Nikon ZR

Nikon has announced the release of the ZR, marking its first collaboration with RED, the cinema camera company it acquired in April 2022. This new model features enhancements tailored for video shooters, leveraging Nikon’s existing Z-mount adaptability, internal RAW video recording capabilities, and recognized color science.

One of the ZR’s prominent features is its ability to record in RED R3D NE files, which facilitate post-production adjustments to settings such as ISO and white balance. This flexibility is expected to appeal to users familiar with RED cameras, as it simplifies the process of matching footage with existing RED material.

The ZR is primarily based on Nikon’s Z6III, which was released the previous year. It utilizes a partially-stacked 24-megapixel full-frame sensor, offers 7.5 stops of in-body image stabilization (IBIS), and boasts a dynamic range exceeding 15 stops. The camera’s dimensions are compact at 133×80.5×48.7mm, and it includes video-centric features such as 32-bit audio output through the hotshoe and microphone jack. Additionally, it features a substantial 4-inch articulating touchscreen with a brightness of 1000 nits.

The Nikon ZR is set to be available for purchase at a price of $2,199, with a release date scheduled for October 20th.
