Andrew Lynas, a key figure in Northern Ireland’s catering industry from Lynas Foodservice, has noted that customers are experiencing increased costs as a result of the Windsor Framework, a post-Brexit agreement. He stated that the complexities of Brexit-related paperwork, health certificates, and additional staffing costs imposed by suppliers in Great Britain have contributed to this situation. Lynas expressed frustration over the added financial burden, which he mentioned has ranged between 1% to 3% more than prices in mainland UK.
The House of Lords’ Northern Ireland Scrutiny Committee recently described the Windsor Framework as “impossible to navigate,” highlighting the difficulties faced by businesses due to its convoluted nature. The UK government maintains that the framework is the only viable option to ensure Northern Ireland’s presence in both the UK internal market and the EU single market, while avoiding a hard border on the island of Ireland.
The scrutiny committee’s report recommends that the government’s Trader Support Service, designed to assist businesses with new customs processes, be reformed for better efficiency. The committee’s chair, Lord Carlile, suggested that it should provide a centralized resource for businesses to access information and solutions more readily.
Lynas pointed out that while the framework has some beneficial aspects, particularly with the ‘green lanes’—which facilitate trade from Great Britain to Northern Ireland—its ‘red lanes’ create hurdles for businesses trading across the island of Ireland. With ongoing discussions scheduled between the UK and EU, Lynas has called for innovative solutions, including the use of technology, to streamline the trade process.
A government spokesperson reiterated their commitment to maintaining the framework as the only workable solution for Northern Ireland’s unique situation, promising to consider the committee’s findings and engage with local businesses to enhance economic stability.
