NASA has addressed claims made by reality television star Kim Kardashian suggesting that the 1969 Moon landing was fabricated. In a social media post, acting administrator Sean Duffy emphasized that NASA has successfully sent humans to the Moon on six occasions.
Kardashian’s comments occurred during the latest episode of her show, The Kardashians, where she expressed doubts about the authenticity of the Moon landing while conversing with her co-star Sarah Paulson. Despite enduring scrutiny and debunking efforts for over five decades, conspiracy theories regarding the Moon landings continue to circulate, particularly amplified by social media.
During the episode, Kardashian referenced an interview with astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who was among the first astronauts to walk on the lunar surface alongside Neil Armstrong during the Apollo 11 mission. She cited a quote attributed to Aldrin in which he allegedly remarks that the perceived scariest moments of the mission are moot because the landing “didn’t happen.” It remains unclear whether the quotes she presented are genuine, as no sources have been confirmed.
Kardashian also mentioned her interest in conspiracy theories, asserting her belief that the Moon landing was a hoax and referencing several videos featuring Aldrin discussing the topic. Following her remarks, Duffy responded, tagging Kardashian and promoting NASA’s ongoing Artemis program aimed at future lunar exploration.
In her subsequent reply, Kardashian inquired about the interstellar object 3I/Atlas, which has been identified by astronomers as potentially the oldest comet observed. Duffy later extended an invitation to her to visit the Kennedy Space Center during the Artemis launch.
While popular culture continues to re-examine the validity of the Apollo missions, numerous scientists and organizations, including the Institute of Physics, maintain that the arguments supporting the idea that the Moon landings were a fabrication have been thoroughly discredited.
