A mother from Norwich, Amy, has reported an incident where her three-year-old daughter’s hair was pulled out by an electric cleaning brush she purchased online for £4. The incident occurred shortly after the brush, which Amy intended to use for housework, was taken out of its packaging by her daughter. According to Amy, the brush activated unexpectedly, becoming entangled in her child’s hair, resulting in a significant bald patch.
Following the incident, Amy contacted Norfolk Trading Standards, which confirmed that the product has been removed from sale in the UK at the request of Temu, the online retailer. A spokesperson for Temu expressed concern over the incident and stated that they prioritize customer safety. They also mentioned that their customer service team is reaching out to assist the family.
Amy described the moment her daughter picked up the brush, explaining that she did not initially grasp the severity of the situation until she observed the hair caught in the device. She noted her daughter’s subsequent distress, which increased later as the child reported pain in her head. Despite a month passing since the incident, Amy stated that her daughter’s hair has not started to regrow, and she expressed a desire to prevent other children from experiencing similar harm.
Temu, founded in 2022 as a third-party online marketplace, acknowledged the removal of the brush and other similar products as a precautionary measure. A representative from Norfolk Trading Standards indicated that the company voluntarily withdrew the product for a review, focusing on compliance with safety regulations and guidelines. Additionally, the unsafe product has been listed on a safety database used by local authorities to track hazardous items.
