Much of US shark meat comes from endangered species, study finds | Sharks

A recent study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill indicates that a significant portion of shark meat sold in the United States is mislabeled, with many products sourced from endangered species. The research assessed shark meat available in supermarkets, fish markets, and online retailers, finding that 93% of the samples were either inaccurately labeled or described in a way that left consumers unaware of the species being sold. Out of 29 shark meat products analyzed, only one was labeled correctly.

The study’s primary aim was to determine the species identity of shark meat sold in the U.S. Researchers purchased and conducted DNA analysis on these products, revealing that they belonged to 11 different shark species, including the critically endangered great hammerhead and scalloped hammerhead sharks. These species were found in markets at prices as low as $2.99 per pound.

Most of the tested samples were labeled simply as “shark” or “mako shark,” with only two items carrying specific species names—one of which was misidentified. The ambiguity in labeling raises concerns, as it limits consumers’ ability to make informed choices regarding their food. Notably, both the scalloped hammerhead and great hammerhead are advised against for consumption due to high levels of contaminants.

Furthermore, shark meat is known for high mercury concentrations, which pose significant health risks, particularly for children and pregnant women. The increasing availability of shark meat in U.S. markets raises questions, especially considering the dramatic decline in shark populations globally—over 70% since 1970—as well as ongoing overfishing fueled by demand for shark products in various industries, including pet food and cosmetics. The findings have implications not only for marine conservation but also for public health.
