Individuals using the weight loss medication Mounjaro have been cautioned against purchasing from black market sources or bulk buying. This warning follows an announcement by Eli Lilly, the U.S. pharmaceutical company that manufactures the drug, regarding a planned price increase of up to 170% in the UK starting September. While the company has stated that the National Health Service (NHS) will be insulated from this increase, most users buy Mounjaro privately due to limited NHS access, with a month’s supply costing around £200.
Henry Gregg, CEO of the National Pharmacy Association (NPA), highlighted the anxiety triggered by the rising costs among patients and pharmacies. He urged individuals to refrain from bulk ordering and purchasing Mounjaro at significantly reduced prices, as this could jeopardize supply and patient safety. Unauthorized sellers might provide counterfeit medications or those not adhering to UK safety regulations. Patients are advised to consult their prescribers for proper guidance and support.
Reports of stockpiling have emerged, as some individuals express alarm over the price hike. One patient, who began using Mounjaro in October 2024, recounted losing weight but facing financial stress due to the anticipated increase. Online pharmacies have noted a spike in demand for an alternative weight loss medication, Wegovy, produced by Novo Nordisk, which reportedly remains priced lower and currently has no plans for a price change.
Graham Thoms, CEO of Pharmadoctor, indicated that Mounjaro constitutes a substantial portion of all weight loss treatments offered by affiliated pharmacies. He mentioned that pharmacists have sought guidance on transitioning patients to Wegovy if Mounjaro becomes financially unmanageable. However, he emphasized that such changes should be approached carefully, as ongoing patient evaluations are essential.
Concerns regarding the safety of microdosing Mounjaro as promoted on social media platforms have also been raised by an online pharmacy. Amidst the uncertainty, it is advised that patients assess their treatment options and consult healthcare professionals for tailored advice.
