Monopoly 50p coin released by Royal Mint for 90th anniversary

A commemorative 50p coin celebrating the board game Monopoly is set to be released by the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf. This release coincides with the 90th anniversary of the game’s creation. Notably, this marks the first instance of a board game being honored on a UK currency.

The design of the coin features Mr. Monopoly alongside various property cards and game tokens. It includes a unique design element on the “GO” sign that transforms to display the game’s “M” money symbol when tilted. Monopoly, which first launched in 1935, has been translated into 47 languages and sold over 275 million copies globally, with estimates suggesting approximately one billion players over the years. The game’s currency is recognized as one of the most printed forms of money worldwide.

The commemorative coin will be available in both silver and gold editions. According to Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, the design pays homage to a game that has brought families together for almost a century. Marianne James, Senior Vice President of Global Licensing at Hasbro, noted the significance of the game in family life and expressed delight in the partnership with the Royal Mint for this occasion.

The Monopoly 50p coin will be offered for purchase on The Royal Mint’s website at a price of £15. As part of the launch celebration for this collectible, the Royal Mint has also announced that a solid gold coin will be hidden behind door 24 of its advent calendar, providing a unique opportunity for someone to discover it on Christmas Eve.
