A federal investigation has uncovered an extensive poker gambling scheme allegedly operated by members of various mafia families, including the Bonanno, Gambino, Lucchese, and Genovese crime organizations. The scheme reportedly targeted celebrities, professional athletes, and wealthy gamblers who were unaware that the games were rigged. Prosecutors allege victims were defrauded of at least $7 million, with one individual losing approximately $1.8 million.
The operation, described as “mind-boggling” by FBI Director Kash Patel, involved sophisticated technology such as X-ray card tables, secret cameras, and advanced communication methods to relay information during games. An X-ray table could read face-down cards, while special sunglasses and contact lenses allowed insiders to determine players’ hands. Prosecutors detailed a network of individuals who coordinated the scheme, using rigged machines and methods to effectively ensure the “fish,” as the unsuspecting players were termed, would lose.
More than 30 arrests have been made in connection to this scheme, including notable figures such as Chauncey Billups, head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, and former NBA player Damon Jones. Both are accused of playing roles in the fraudulent activities. The FBI noted that the scheme has had nationwide ramifications, exploiting both high-profile individuals and financially vulnerable players.
Additionally, the investigation revealed a connection between this poker fraud and an alleged plot involving NBA players faking injuries for betting advantages. Billups has been placed on leave while the NBA and the Trail Blazers investigate the allegations against him. The defendants are also accused of laundering money through various means, including cryptocurrency and shell companies, which were reportedly used to support further criminal enterprises.
