Meta has introduced new technology called “Hyperscape,” designed to enable users to create digital, photorealistic replicas of real-world spaces using a Quest VR headset. This feature is part of a gradual rollout, starting today, with the Hyperscape Capture app available in beta for Quest 3 and Quest 3S users. Initially, individuals will have access only to the rooms they have personally scanned, but Meta plans to allow shared visits through private links in the future.
The company originally showcased Hyperscape during a demonstration at Connect 2024, indicating its potential significance in the realm of virtual reality and metaverse development. A specific example used in the demo was a digital recreation of Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen. While the technology appears to be in early stages, Meta aims to enhance user engagement by replicating physical environments in a virtual format.
During a demonstration at Connect 2025, prescanned rooms, including Ramsay’s kitchen, revealed a high level of detail. Users were able to examine items closely, although some details, such as text, could appear slightly smudged. Participants were able to interact with the capture app by wearing a Quest 3 headset and scanning their surroundings. During the app’s operation, a mesh overlay formed over objects in the environment, indicating what had been scanned. The demonstration encouraged users to move closer to objects, which caused the mesh to disappear, showing detailed scans. However, the entire scanning process was not completed in the session.
Meta reports that once a room is fully scanned, the data is uploaded to the cloud for processing, which can take several hours before the user can explore their virtual replica.
