Meta has established a partnership with solar developer Silicon Ranch to create a $100 million solar farm in South Carolina, which will have a capacity of 100 megawatts. This solar installation is intended to support Meta’s upcoming AI data center in the state, projected to cost $800 million. Both facilities are anticipated to commence operations in 2027.
The companies have indicated that most of the equipment for the solar farm will be manufactured in the United States. This agreement marks the 18th partnership between Meta and Silicon Ranch, contributing to over $2.5 billion in investments driven by these collaborations.
In 2023, Meta has added over 2 gigawatts of solar capacity. In June, the company signed a contract with Invenergy for several solar projects in Ohio, while in May, it announced plans to work with AES on a project to develop 650 megawatts of solar energy in both Kansas and Texas. Additionally, Meta is collaborating with Engie and Zelestra in Texas for the development of nearly 800 megawatts of solar capacity.
Meta’s strategy to utilize renewable energy sources, such as solar, aligns with its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions. The rapid and cost-effective deployment of solar power also addresses efficiency concerns regarding the provision of energy to new data centers. As the demand for data centers continues to grow, it raises the question of how renewable energy will evolve in supporting future technological infrastructure.
