Meta is making the metaverse look better

Meta is currently enhancing its social platform, Horizon Worlds, which is similar to Roblox. Key updates include the implementation of a new game engine designed to offer improved graphics and performance. Alongside this, the introduction of Meta Horizon Studio aims to support creators in designing custom in-game experiences.

Meta Horizon Studio serves as an editor that allows creators to build virtual reality (VR) worlds. At present, creators have access to generative AI tools for creating elements such as textures and audio. Later this year, Meta plans to introduce an AI assistant within the editor to further assist in the development process. A demonstration at Connect 2025 showcased a developer using an AI chatbot to request modifications like the addition of a new environment and adjustments to the personality of an AI-driven non-player character (NPC).

The underlying technology for these enhanced metaverse environments is powered by the Horizon Engine. According to Meta, this engine facilitates better graphics, improved performance, and more sophisticated VR worlds, as well as enabling greater concurrency among users.

Despite these advancements, Horizon Worlds has not gained widespread popularity, even with its recent expansion to mobile platforms. To address this, Meta is actively working to attract additional creators to the platform. Earlier this year, the company established a $50 million creators fund to incentivize the development of content for the metaverse.
