MCD-Parking alleged QR code ‘scam’ goes viral, you may have fallen for this too (HT Tech)

A viral video shared on X has raised concerns about a potential QR code parking scam involving the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). In the video, a man is seen collecting parking fees using a Razorpay point-of-sale (POS) machine, which displays a PhonePe QR code. This raised suspicions among vehicle owners recording the incident.

During the video, the driver is heard repeatedly questioning the attendant about the PhonePe QR code on the Razorpay machine. The attendant fails to provide a clear explanation and insists on collecting the parking fee. When the QR code is scanned, it reveals the payment recipient’s name as Vinod Kumar rather than the MCD. This prompted vehicle owners to refuse payment, questioning why funds would go to an individual instead of the municipal body.

The attendant claimed to be Vinod Kumar and stated that he was authorized by a contractor to collect fees on behalf of the MCD. This situation has elicited varied responses online, with some users noting that MCD parking receipts often feature contractor details instead of the municipal name.

The video has caught the attention of fintech leaders such as Razorpay’s founder, Shashank Kumar, who announced plans to improve security in upcoming software updates. Paytm’s founder, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, highlighted his company’s features aimed at preventing similar scams.

  • Why it matters: This incident highlights the need for increased scrutiny of contractor practices in public parking fee collections and raises awareness about potential QR code scams affecting consumers.
  • The latest: Razorpay plans to disable unnecessary gallery access in future software updates to enhance security against such scams.
