Mark Zuckerberg – no, not that one

A lawyer named Mark S. Zuckerberg, based in Indiana, is suing the social media company Meta (formerly Facebook) for repeatedly suspending his account. He contends that these suspensions are based on false accusations of “impersonating a celebrity.” Over the past eight years, his account has been disabled five times, resulting in lost business opportunities.

In his lawsuit, filed in Marion Superior Court, Mr. Zuckerberg states that he has been a practicing attorney for 38 years, predating the fame of Mark E. Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook. He argues that Meta has breached a contract with him by improperly taking down advertising he had paid for, amounting to $11,000 (£8,200). Mr. Zuckerberg likens this to purchasing billboard space only to have it obscured after payment.

Emails shared by Mr. Zuckerberg with local media reveal that Meta has accused him of not using his “authentic name.” He claims to have provided documentation, including a photo ID and credit cards, to verify his identity. In response to his lawsuit, Meta stated that his account had been reinstated after it was determined that the suspension was in error. The company expressed appreciation for Mr. Zuckerberg’s patience and mentioned that it is working to prevent similar issues in the future.

Mr. Zuckerberg specializes in bankruptcy law and has created a website to document instances of confusion related to his name, which has included a past incident where he was mistakenly sued by the state of Washington. His account was last suspended in May, only to be restored following the filing of his lawsuit.
