At Marineland Antibes in France, a male killer whale named Keijo is undergoing sexual stimulation by trainers to prevent inbreeding with his mother, Wikie. Marineland closed in January, amid a lack of agreement between facility managers, the French government, and animal rights activists on a suitable relocation plan for the orcas. This situation is further complicated by a new French law set to take effect in December, which prohibits the use of whales in marine zoo performances.
Currently, Wikie, 24 years old, and her 11-year-old son Keijo remain in their pools while trainers care for them. Footage obtained by the activist group TideBreakers showed trainers standing by Keijo, who was seen upside down and being stimulated in the water while Wikie was in an adjacent pool. Marineland’s management stated that this practice is necessary as Keijo is reaching adolescence and experiencing strong sexual urges.
Managers claim that the stimulation is performed once a month to relieve Keijo’s tensions and to prevent potential fighting between the mother and son. They assert that the procedure is natural and painless. The French ecology ministry has confirmed they were informed about the monthly stimulation and that a veterinary expert was consulted.
Concerns have been raised regarding the implications of utilizing Keijo’s semen for breeding, as he is inbred—his parents are half-siblings. Additionally, no significant developments have occurred regarding the orcas’ relocation since Marineland’s closure. Experts have echoed concerns about the adequacy of Marineland’s facilities for the orcas and the potential dangers of keeping them there.
Efforts to improve conditions for the animals include planned expert assessments and discussions regarding their future care at a European level. However, activists feel the urgency is increasing as no immediate solutions are in place for the welfare of Wikie and Keijo.
