Authorities in Malawi are investigating the disappearance of four police dogs from a presidential palace in Lilongwe during a political transition in September. The dogs, valued at approximately $2,300, went missing between September 19 and October 4. Godfrey Arthur Jalale, who served as State House deputy chief of staff under former President Lazarus Chakwera, has been arrested in connection with the incident but has denied the charges against him.
Following his loss in the elections to President Peter Mutharika, Chakwera vacated the palace. While police have stated that Chakwera has not been arrested, they have secured a search warrant for his residence based on information suggesting that the dogs may be housed there. Chakwera, who received 33% of the vote in the September elections, is also facing various allegations regarding the mismanagement of public resources during the handover of power.
Chakwera’s Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has accused the Mutharika administration of “harassment and intimidation” of the former leader. Reports from local media indicate that state property has been reported missing from two presidential residences, including the Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe and Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.
In a statement, the Malawi Police Service indicated they have intensified investigations into property looting at Kamuzu Palace, assuring the public of the smooth progress of their inquiry. Amid heightened police activity and speculations of potential arrest, MCP MPs boycotted parliamentary sessions and gathered at Chakwera’s residence.
Chakwera, previously a pastor and known for his active campaigning, has kept a low profile following his electoral defeat. He recently made his first public appearance since the elections, announcing a Commonwealth appointment to mediate discussions regarding post-election unrest in Tanzania. President Mutharika, who campaigned on a platform of returning to “proven leadership,” faces challenges due to the country’s ongoing crises, including fuel and foreign currency shortages. Concerns about his health and ability to lead at the age of 85 persist amidst these developments.
