MacBook Pro rumor points to OLED, touchscreen upgrades next year

Mark Gurman has reported ongoing plans for a major revamp of the MacBook Pro line, which will include the addition of touchscreens, OLED displays, and a lighter, thinner frame. Originally expected to launch in late 2025, the introduction of these features has been delayed due to challenges with OLED supply chains. Gurman recently provided more insights into the upcoming models, identifying codenames K114 and K116 along with various specifications.

While touchscreens have been standard in Windows laptops for years, Apple has traditionally opted out, introducing the Touch Bar in its MacBook Pro models until 2021 when it changed its approach. Gurman also mentioned a potential shift from Touch ID to Face ID for user authentication; however, this feature is projected to be several years away.

In the meantime, updates to the existing MacBook Pro will see the release of the M5 Pro and M5 Max models with the current design expected early next year. Additional updates for the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, Mac Mini, and various monitors are also reportedly in development.

According to Gurman, the forthcoming MacBook Pros will be equipped with M6 series Apple processors, a hole-punch style integrated webcam similar to that featured on the iPhone, and reinforced hinges designed to maintain stability during touchscreen use.

While these enhancements aim to improve functionality and performance, they may lead to higher prices, potentially increasing by several hundred dollars. It is also noted that these upgrades may not initially extend to Apple’s more budget-friendly laptop models.
