Looks like I’m dead: Mom’s self-written obituary goes viral after her death

Linda Murphy, a 60-year-old woman from Massachusetts, died on September 21 after battling Bulbar ALS, a neurodegenerative disorder she was diagnosed with in 2022. Prior to her passing, Murphy composed her own obituary in April, which has since gained widespread attention.

In her obituary, published by the New York Post, Murphy shared her thoughts with a blend of humor and poignancy. She remarked, “Well, if you’re reading this, looks like I’m dead. Wow, it actually happened.” She detailed her challenges with Bulbar ALS, including losing her ability to speak and the difficulties of daily life, such as participating in family meals.

Murphy’s background included a career as a nursing home administrator and involvement in her family’s real estate business. She had previously overcome breast cancer in 2012. In her reflections, she praised her husband, David, and her children, stating they were the “absolute best thing” in her life.

Additionally, she planned her own funeral arrangements, incorporating personal touches such as music selections and a dance party for her celebration of life. Murphy also made the decision to donate her brain and spinal cord for ALS research. Her final message urged kindness, stating, “Be kind to everyone.”

Murphy’s daughter, Justine Hastings, recounted her mother’s vibrant personality and the viral response to the obituary has resonated with many, with comments celebrating Murphy’s spirit.
