Royal Mail, with a history dating back over 500 years, is facing criticism from its workforce after it downgraded its traditional Christmas gift from first-class to second-class stamps this year. In the past, employees received a book of either 50 or 100 first-class stamps, but for 2023, the company has opted for a collection of 50 second-class stamps. This change has caused confusion and disappointment among staff, particularly as this marks the first Christmas since Royal Mail’s parent company, International Distribution Services (IDS), was acquired by Czech billionaire Daniel Křetínský.
Seasonal stamps have been a staple of the postal service since 1966, featuring various designs over the years. The 2023 edition features biblical scenes illustrated by artist Paula Doherty. In contrast, past editions included contributions from notable illustrators such as Quentin Blake. A sheet of 50 first-class stamps, which would have cost about £85, contrasts sharply with the second-class version valued at £43.50, raising questions about the financial motivations behind this change given that Royal Mail employs approximately 130,000 people.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has expressed its members’ dissatisfaction with this alteration, suggesting it sends a negative message about how employees are valued. A spokesperson mentioned the ongoing disappointment among workers regarding their treatment. Royal Mail stated that the decision to provide second-class stamps reflects recent changes to its universal service obligation and aims to ensure efficient mail service during the busy festive season.
Despite the earlier transition of the stamps gift this year compared to previous years, which were typically delivered at the end of November, employees received a card highlighting that Royal Mail has been “delivering Christmas” for centuries. This card was signed by the company’s executive team but notably absent of signatures from IDS leadership or Křetínský.
