Kuxiu’s S3 MagSafe power bank is bigger, better, and safer

Kuxiu has introduced the S3 portable battery, an update to its previous model, the S2. The S3 focuses on enhancing previous issues while adding features such as a kickstand and an integrated USB-C cable. Notably, the S3 is marketed as a semi-solid state power bank, utilizing a solid-liquid mixed electrolyte, which is said to be less susceptible to thermal runaway compared to traditional liquid lithium-ion batteries. It offers a capacity of 10,000 mAh and is claimed to last up to 1,000 charging cycles before fading to 80% capacity.

With a retail price of $149.98, the S3 is more expensive than typical 10,000 mAh power banks, which are generally priced between $300 to $500 for similar capacity. However, discounts can bring the price down to under $70, potentially making it more economical over its lifespan due to its higher durability.

Safety concerns have been highlighted, particularly in light of recent recalls by other manufacturers due to fire risks associated with their power banks. Despite this, Kuxiu asserts that their battery’s design features upgrades like a digital display and quicker charging capabilities, supporting wired charging at 30W and wireless charging up to 25W for Qi-enabled devices.

Regarding practical use, the S3 is noted to be bulkier than its predecessors, weighing 245.3 grams and measuring 106.9 x 71 x 22.15 mm, which may be inconvenient for portability, especially when combined with a device like the iPhone 15 Pro. Preliminary tests indicated that the S3 could fully charge the iPhone twice, delivering 80.83% efficiency from its energy output.

As an alternative, Kuxiu continues to sell its 5,000 mAh S2 model for $49.99, catering to those seeking a more portable option. Overall, the S3 adds significant capabilities while raising questions about its trade-offs in size and weight.
