Maggie Kang, the creator and co-director of Kpop Demon Hunters, expressed enthusiasm for exploring additional narratives featuring the animated girl group Huntr/x. In a recent conversation with the BBC, Kang noted that while there are no confirmed plans, there are possibilities for further stories within this universe. Kpop Demon Hunters has achieved significant success on Netflix, reportedly surpassing Squid Game as the platform’s most-watched title, with over 325 million views.
The animated film centers on a successful Kpop trio attempting to battle evil forces while performing massive concerts. Their main adversaries are the demon-based boy band Saja Boys. The film has set multiple records, including being the first Netflix movie to claim the top of the US box office with a sing-along version and having its soundtrack dominate US music charts.
Kang and co-director Chris Appelhans are optimistic about the film’s potential to be recognized at the upcoming Oscars, with the project reportedly favored for the best animated feature. Kpop Demon Hunters currently holds a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Kang and Appelhans also noted discussions about potential song nominations for the Oscars, with various tracks being considered.
The film’s popularity has grown significantly since its June release, remaining the most-watched film in 19 countries, including the US and UK, months later. The voices of Huntr/x, Rei Ami, Audrey Nuna, and EJAY, have also participated in high-profile performances.
Both directors clarified that they do not consider their work as anime, expressing their inspiration from various influences, including Korean filmmakers and K-dramas. They also dismissed rumors of a live-action adaptation, emphasizing that the animated format allows for unique storytelling and character dynamics. Regardless of future accolades, the creators feel they have achieved their goal of connecting audiences through their film.
