Amazon has introduced a new feature in the Kindle app called “Ask this Book,” designed to provide spoiler-free answers to reader questions about the text. This feature allows users to inquire about plot details, character relationships, and thematic elements based on the content they have already read.
The company describes Ask this Book as an “expert reading assistant” that functions like an in-book chatbot. Readers can access it either from the book menu or by highlighting specific passages of text within the eBook.
According to Amazon spokesperson Ale Iraheta, the answers provided through this feature are “non-shareable and non-copyable” and are only available to those who have purchased or rented the books. Additionally, Iraheta noted that this feature is permanently enabled, and authors or publishers do not have the option to exclude their titles from its use.
This development raises questions related to the implications for authors and publishers regarding consent and the management of content in digital formats.
