A chocolatier from Tempur Tempur Chocolate in Southborough, Kent, has reported that rising costs have led her business to create smaller product versions. Sarah Hall, the manager, explained that suppliers had to increase their prices due to adverse weather conditions impacting cocoa harvests.
In response to this, the business now offers customers the option to purchase smaller chocolate bars, catering to those who may prefer not to spend more on larger bars. The Office for National Statistics indicates that the price of chocolate has risen by 15% over the past year.
The chocolatier sources chocolate made from cocoa originating in regions of Africa where climate-related issues have negatively affected crop yield. Hall mentioned that severe droughts and poor harvests in cocoa-producing countries, such as Ivory Coast and Ghana, have contributed to the diminished supply. The ongoing effects of climate change are thought to exacerbate these weather-related challenges.
In addition to chocolate, Hall noted that the prices of nuts and fruits have also increased significantly. She expressed concern over the climbing utility costs that many businesses are facing. While Tempur Tempur Chocolate is currently managing the situation, Hall expressed a desire to avoid further price increases. Nonetheless, she remains hopeful that chocolate prices may eventually decrease.
